A year ago today I visited my home country, Colombia for the first time in many years. I felt so inspired by the architecture, aesthetics and history. But I also felt an intense sense of nostalgia and longing for something I didn’t experience for long, but was an inherent part of me.
It’s always the same feeling I have when I go, but this time it I wanted to capture it; I wanted to showcase the beauty and pain I see in my country from my own perspective; a young Colombian girl who grew up in Canada as a cultural hybrid who today is still finding and seeking her own truth. I wanted to capture the richness of my culture while staying true to my own path because the Colombia I see is not the same one my parents see.
Colombia is my home country, but it’s also not home. Nonetheless, I am profoundly proud of my heritage, and in 𝘛𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢 I wanted to capture the raw beauty I see when I go back; a resilient and rough beauty that has survived so much pain and suffering but had managed to remain whole. And that’s something I can certainly relate to.🤍
